I have to admit I made a misleading pun for the purposes of this blog post. Ginger, the Star Ingredient of this week's deep dive, is actually NOT categorized as a root.
So What is Ginger Then?
Ginger "root" is actually a misnomer, since ginger is technically a rhizome, which is an underground stem. You may have thought you knew everything about this more recognized and beloved ingredient, but people have been discovering ginger's magical properties for over 5,000 years and the plant always has more to reveal!
Benefits of Ginger
Ginger can be used to ease morning sickness during pregnancy, help with chemotherapy-related nausea, help alleviate pains related to indigestion, speed up emptying of the stomach, reduce menstrual pain, help improve brain function, and is loaded with nutrients and compounds that help keep you feeling great and your body running as smoothly as it can.
The Science of Ginger
Ginger contains Gingerol, a phenolic compound in fresh ginger with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. This means that even while sipping on Mellow Mule all evening long, you'll get all of the benefits and none of the post-party pain and hangxiety. No alcohol = no stressin.
One last ginger drop to leave you on? Queen Elizabeth I is credited with inventing the gingerbread man! Does that mean our gingerbread selves would sound like they're on Love Island???
